TV Series To Showcase Work Of Great North Air Ambulance

January 9, 2015

A PRIMETIME television series will go behind the scenes at the region’s air ambulance charity.

Sky television will broadcast the six part documentary series Air Ambulance ER featuring the work of the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) from Tuesday, January 6.

Glasgow-based production firm Tern TV spent four months over last summer filming with the GNAAS crew as they embarked on hundreds of missions throughout the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

Series producer Louise Say, from Tern TV, said the forthcoming series combines “glossy cinematography with fantastic characters and cutting edge medicine”.

She added: “This elite team takes a hospital intensive care unit to the roadside, and use medical techniques honed on the battlefields of the world’s toughest war zones.

“The film crew – producer director Matt Dolan and assistant producer Lindsay Goodall – were there every step of the way, from the moment the red phone rings, to the treatment of patients at the scene and their transfer to hospital.

“Back at base they filmed the lighter moments of this close knit team – anything from making a cuppa to cleaning the loos – it’s all part of a day in the life of the crew.”

Jim Entwistle, GNAAS spokesman, said: “The series offers an unflinching look at the work of our medics as they battle to save lives across the region. As a charity, it can only be of benefit to us as it showcases the nature of the work we do and the level of expertise we have on board our helicopters.”

The first episode, broadcast at 9pm on Sky One HD on January 6, features a man who had fallen into the glass tubes of a sunbed in South Shields and an 80mph speedway crash in Workington.

Future episodes feature rescues from across GNAAS’ area of operation including:

  • A mother and daughter’s high speed motorcycle crash in Teesside
  • A tricky landing after a cycle crash on a Cumbrian mountain pass
  • A female jockey in North Yorkshire breaking her leg badly after coming off her horse

The series will be screened every Tuesday, with repeats over the course of the following week.

The series also follows the work of Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
