First MD Explorer ready for Cornwall Air Ambulance

November 28, 2014

Cornwall Air Ambulance are on the point of taking delivery of two MD Explorers as part of the next stage of the organisation’s evolution.  The delivery brings a whole raft of changes with a new operator, new helicopter type, dual aircraft working, and (later) a night flying capability.  The Explorers – operated by Specialist Aviation Services – will replace a single Eurocopter EC135 operated by Bond Air Services, ending a 27 year relationship with th\t operator.  The move to two-aircraft operations has been around for nearly five years, with Cornwall Air Ambulance submitting a planning application in August 2010 for their current hangar, and no doubt much discussion went into the dual aircraft operations scenario before they even approached an architect.

The eventual target is two aircraft with the registrations G-CNWL and G-CIOS (the latter referring to the Isle Of Scilly) but the first aircrft prepared for delivery is neither of these.  G-CNWL is an ex CALSTAR aircraft from California, while G-CIOS has not even been registered with the CAA yet, suggesting there may still be some discussion

The first aircraft completed for the role is G-SASO – previously operated by the FBI – and G-CNWL is painted but not completely ready for handover.

The new contract goes live on 7th December 2014 according to Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Tom Matthews
